METHODOLOGY

How OAV™ Prices the Market

Eligible vehicles with enough comparable evidence carry a Price-to-Market label — Great Deal, Fair Price, or Overpriced; when the evidence is insufficient or fails OAV's reliability guards, the vehicle is Unscored. This page explains how OAV prices vehicles: what data we use, how comparables are selected, and how OAV interprets market position. The verdict thresholds that decide where 'Great Deal' ends and 'Fair Price' begins are published in full at app.oav.io/price-to-market, so any rating can be checked against the price and comparable range shown on the listing. What remains proprietary is how OAV builds the comparable range — the comparable-cohort assembly logic and standardization weights. Published rankings such as the Best New-Car Deals boards separately disclose that board's own eligibility rules and ranking formula in full, so the published order can be checked against OAV's own comparable-range figures.

DAILY INVENTORY REFRESH

~6 million listings ingested every 24 hours

Data last updated: daily — inventory refreshed every 24 hours — roughly 6 million listings observed every 24 hours, resolving to about 6 million unique vehicles (as of October 28, 2026) across 56,000+ dealerships nationwide.

Multiple U.S. car dealership lots connected by data signals overlaid on a map of the United States, representing OAV™ national vehicle inventory analysis

What we measure

OAV™ analyzes inventory refreshed daily across the United States and compares each listing against comparable vehicles — starting with the local market and broadening to a regional cohort only when local evidence is insufficient to support a reliable range — to determine whether a vehicle is priced competitively. Every data point reflects active retail listings — not private-party values, wholesale prices, or book values. OAV’s sold-price and wholesale-anchored series are separate, labeled evidence and are never inputs to the price verdict.

Where the data comes from

Listing data is sourced through licensed third-party inventory feeds and refreshed daily as dealers update, add, or remove vehicles. OAV™ contextualizes that data — it does not originate it. This is the same class of licensed, professional-grade inventory data used across automotive finance and dealer operations. OAV™ makes it accessible to every buyer.

STANDARDIZED ACROSS EVERY SOURCE

Patented normalization across thousands of dealer formats

Dealer inventory arrives from thousands of independent websites in thousands of different formats. OAV™’s patented standardization technology (U.S. Patent No. 12,236,477) normalizes every listing into a single canonical schema — make, model, trim, year, mileage, price, drivetrain, geography.

That means a Ford F-150 listed in Dallas and one listed in Denver are described in the same fields, the same way, however each dealer formatted its listing. Standardization is what makes comparison possible. Which listings actually enter the comparable set for a given vehicle is decided separately, and starts local.

Step 3
PRICE-TO-MARKET ANALYSIS

Every vehicle compared against its local market first

For every vehicle, OAV starts with sufficiently similar vehicles currently available in the local market and broadens to a regional cohort only when local evidence is insufficient to support a reliable range.

YEAR · MAKE · MODEL

Year, make and model, plus trim or configuration when the data supports it.

LOCAL FIRST

Starts with the local market and broadens to a regional cohort only when local inventory is too thin to support a reliable range.

AVAILABILITY

Only vehicles listed in the latest daily snapshot qualify as comparables.

POWERED BY OAV™ MARKET INTELLIGENCE

Know exactly where a vehicle stands in the market — at a glance

Every listing on OAV™ is automatically benchmarked against comparable vehicles — local first, regional only when local evidence is insufficient — so dealers and buyers can make faster, more confident decisions.

PROPRIETARY METHODS

What OAV™ does not publish

To protect the integrity of the platform and the technology behind it, OAV™ keeps the core of its Price-to-Market valuation model — how the comparable range is built — proprietary.

We publish the evidence behind each verdict and the verdict rule itself. The comparable-range construction at the core of the PTM model remains proprietary.

Data accuracy & corrections OAV™ data reflects listings as published by dealers through licensed inventory feeds, updated daily. If you identify a listing that appears incorrect or outdated, contact oavsupport@oav.io. Confirmed data errors are reviewed and addressed within 24 hours.

✅ U.S. Patent No. 12,236,477 — automotive data standardization and processing

OAV™ publishes the data signals used to evaluate each vehicle, the four verdict states and what determines each, the withholding reason shown on every Unscored listing, and the methodology version history (app.oav.io/price-to-market). The verdict thresholds behind each label are published in full (app.oav.io/price-to-market). The comparable-cohort assembly logic and standardization weights that build the range are proprietary; the eligibility rules and ranking formula used on OAV’s published deal boards are disclosed in full for reproducibility.

FAQs

Common questions

Does "overpriced" mean the vehicle is a bad buy?

Not necessarily. It means comparable vehicles are available at lower prices in the current market. The vehicle may still sell — but buyers have leverage to negotiate, and dealers should be aware of where they stand.

OAV™ processes daily refreshed inventory data from dealer and retail sources. Price ratings reflect the latest available market snapshot, not historical averages. Current published verdict methodology: ptm-verdict-v4, effective 2026-10-27 — the same version stamped on every vehicle record and on the homepage evidence card.

When comparables are too limited or fail OAV’s reliability guards, OAV withholds a rating and marks the vehicle Unscored rather than guessing. Thin and single-listing markets are flagged clearly so users know when a confident rating isn’t available.

The rating compares vehicles by year, make, and model — with trim when the data supports it. Mileage is not used to build the comparable set or to adjust comparable prices, but on used vehicles it acts as a reliability check: OAV withholds a verdict when mileage is very high or unreliable, or when a used vehicle’s lower price is better explained by higher-than-typical mileage than by a genuine market discount. Every comparable price shown is the real advertised price, never mileage-adjusted. Condition and trim detail are shown in the full vehicle detail view within OAV™.
